Anzio, Monte Cassino & San Pietro – Italian Campaign

It is estimated that during the Italian Campaign of World War Two, 60,000-70,000 Allied soldiers lost their lives. On this tour we look at some of the key battlefields of 1943 to 1944, in Anzio, Monte Cassino and San Pietro, where the fighting was tough and costly. We also visit war museums and cemeteries, plus, see the stunning views from Monte Cassino and the preserved San Pietro battlefield site.

Day 1

Join your tour group at the Rome hotel this evening.

Day 2 – Anzio

We travel to nearby Anzio. The Anzio landings in January 1944 were designed to bypass the Germans at Cassino and advance rapidly on Rome, but it became one of the most static fronts of WW2. Here, we visit the Anzio War Museum, see the British War Cemeteries and see where the Allies landed. After lunch, we visit the Sicily-Rome American War Cemetery and Visitors’ Centre, before travelling to our hotel in Cassino for three nights.

Day 3 – Monte Cassino; Liri Valley

Today we look at the four battles for Cassino and start by travelling up onto the impressive Monte Cassino, with some stunning views. Here, we visit the Polish Cemetery and Visitors’ Centre and see the monastery. After lunch in Cassino, we visit Cassino War Cemetery and Memorial, the largest British and Commonwealth cemetery in Italy. We then look at the final battle for Cassino, in the Liri Valley and on the Hitler Line, before ending at the River Rapido, seeing the memorials.

HIGHLIGHTS  ★ San Pietro

Day 4 – San Pietro; Italian and French War Cemeteries

This morning we journey to San Pietro, a small village in the crucial Mignano Gap, where American forces fought a tough battle in 1943. This is now a preserved battlefield site and we explore the ruins. After lunch we see the Italian Cemetery at Mignano and the French Cemetery at Venafro. We then return to Cassino for some free time.

Accommodation

You will stay for three nights at the 4-star Rocca Hotel in Cassino, situated close to the world-famous Montecassino Abbey. The hotel was built by Francesco Rocca, who, as a boy, dreamed of owning the best hotel in the area when he grew up. With his tenacity, he made his dream come true and built a 68-room hotel with a huge adjoining restaurant. Today, the hotel provides an ideal base for exploring the history and World War 2 battlefields around the Italian Campaign. The hotel has a bar, restaurant, lounge and lift. All bedrooms have air-conditioning, T.V., and free wi-fi.

In the Rome area, you will stay in a minimum 3-star hotel.
